Bowen Therapy

The nervous system is composed of two components, first; the parasympathetic nervous system, also known as the “rest and digest” system which governs cardiac muscle, smooth muscle, and glandular tissue. When this system is balanced our nervous system is communicating with the rest of the body allowing growth and healing to occur. The second component of our nervous system is the sympathetic nervous system. This system is known as the “fight or flight” system that governs functions such as blood sugar and the release of adrenaline (epinephrine) allowing for quick reactions to stressful stimuli, which we experience on a daily basis.

Bowen therapy, a technique developed in Australia, is designed to address our dominant sympathetic state by allowing the body to go back to its parasympathetic healing state. During a session, clients often drop into deep relaxation indicating the shift between sympathetic to parasympathetic.

Small, soft tissue inputs are given to particular areas of the body, these areas then send signals to the brain to relax the body and create an energetic signal allowing healing to occur.

Bowen Therapy has shown to be effective in:

  • Back pain and sciatica
  • Digestive and bowel problems
  • Earache and TMJ problems
  • Migraines and other types of headaches
  • Fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome
  • Hip, knee, ankle and foot problems
  • Menstrual and hormonal irregularities
  • Neck and shoulder problems (including “frozen shoulder”)
  • Groin pain, pelvic tilt and uneven leg length
  • Respiratory problems and hayfever
  • RSI, carpal tunnel syndrome and tennis elbow
  • Sports and other traumatic injuries
